What to pack in a Sunday bag (and what to leave at home)

A Sunday bag should make walking easier, not turn into a second garage. If you cannot lift it with one hand, you packed for 36 holes. Here is the list we use for after-work nines at municipal courses around Scottsdale.

Always

Glove, a handful of tees, two markers, a repair tool, six extra balls, a small towel, water, and a visor or hat. If the forecast includes anything more than a sprinkle, add the compact umbrella sleeve — not a 62-inch tour umbrella unless you are riding.

Usually

Rangefinder if you do not know the course. Alignment stick only if you are hitting a bucket first. Leave the shag bag, extra shoes, and full rain suit in the car unless the radar is ugly.

Never on a walking nine

A dozen new urethane balls you are afraid to lose, three putters, and a speaker. Play the round. You can nerd out on the range later.
